    NEW AFRICA BUSINESS NEWS, Accra, Ghana- THE ZAMBIAN government has stated that talks are currently ongoing with India’s leading solar-powered water pump manufacturer, Shakti Pumps, for a partnership in digitalized water pumps that could be remotely controlled.

    The Coordinator of the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit, Mr. Chanda Kabwe, said there need for solar pumping technology in Zambia to increase dry season irrigation in order to achieve food security.

    “I wish to emphasize that agriculture productivity now requires modern technology for irrigation in drought hit areas in order to withstand harsh conditions. This can lead to food security, self-sufficiency and incomes for investment in education and health for enhanced human capital development,” he said when he toured the firm’s manufacturing plant in Indore, a city in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

    According to him, introduction of solar-powered water pumps has the potential to increase productivity of smallholder farmers.

    Zambia, he said, was keen to join the International Solar Alliance in order to benefit from the new trends regarding solar for efficiency in water supply.

    Zambia’s High Commissioner to India, His Judith Kapijimpanga said the southern African nation stood ready to benchmark from India in the area technology specially solar water pumping solutions as it has recognize agriculture as the mainstay of the economy.

    The firm’s director for exports, Ramesh Patidar said the technology has been in place in response to the government which wanted to digitalize all services in the country. Xinhua
