Sierra Leone turn on to Exporting Vegetables to Europe

NEW AFRICA BUSINESS NEWS (NABN) Freetown, Sierra Leone– Through the weekend, the Sierra Leone Investment and Export Promotion Agency (SLIEPA) and supplementary Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) toured one of Sierra Leone’s contemporary farm produce exporting companies – Fresh Salone (SL) Limited in Kobbaya – Kaffu Bollum Chiefdom in the Port Loko District, North of Sierra Leone; as the business prepares and ripe to commence vegetable sending abroad to the European Union markets.
Jonathan Rosenfeld – Managing Director (MD) of Fresh Salone affirmed, his farm is authorized to produce vegetables for export, and that he is hoping to export about ten tons of fresh vegetables and frozen leaves every week to the European Union market through clients in Belgium, that will thereafter deliver the produce to other European countries. He announced, he is scheduling to initiate exporting in September of 2020, with a container of frozen cassava leaves.
Five exporters of agricultural produce have formed the Federation of Agricultural Produce Exporters (FAPE-SL) with more members to join, Rosenfeld clarified. They will also be refining hot sauces and dried fruits for the local market as well as export. Rosenfeld enunciate about the assistance he has earned from SLIEPA, which he confessed has been very much instrumental to his success, particularly in enabling to commit and build relations with the local community.
Furthermore, he also applauded the part fiddled by other institutions including the Ministry of Trade and Industry in helping his business prepare for exporting, after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Rev. Abraham Sesay Jones, told his ministry supports the investment which he explained, should be heeded as an eye-opener for Sierra Leoneans as to what is feasible. He stated that, the strategic role of the Ministry of Trade and Industry is to bolster economic growth and ameliorate poverty in Sierra Leone. He encouraged Sierra Leoneans to pursue the standard of Fresh Salone to amass wealth through investment and interest, and eradicate poverty in line with the vision of President Bio.
He said, a lot of good things have emerged under the New Direction Government and there is a lot more to come, as he thanked the members of FAPE-SL and ensured them of the Ministry’s enormous backing in their effort to clout foreign exchange for their business. The Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry similarly, announced that they want to fund the private sector with an upcoming micro-credit scheme for everyone that wants to start a business.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Sierra Leone Investment and Export Promotion Agency – Lexmond Koroma, (SLIEPA) noted that, the conclusion of Fresh Salone to export vegetables is significant because, it lessens Sierra Leone’s symmetry of payments debt. He added that, SLIEPA has been part of the achievement of Fresh
Salone and that such a feat of exporting ten tons of fresh vegetables, can only come to pass with the aid of the New Direction Government through the Ministry of Trade and Industry and SLIEPA.
He furthermore announced, that the Government of President Bio will proceed to assist Rosenfeld and that his venture is well protected, as his success will attract other investors to come to Sierra Leone. Koroma implored to the traditional leaders and the community to cooperate with Fresh Salone for the good of the country and the community.
Local Chief of Lungi Section – Alimamy Samba Dumbuya II, on behalf of the Paramount Chief (PC) Bai Shebora of Kaffu Bullum Chiefdom, said that Fresh Salone enterprise is their baby, and ascertained that, the community will wholeheartedly go on to give security. He said the Paramount Chief recommended Fresh Salone to implement the government’s Local.
