Senegal, 10 Days ahead of March 24 Presidential Elections Ousmane Sonko Released from Prison

NEW AFRICA BUSINESS NEWS (NABN) Freetown, Sierra Leone- This development has provoked a lofty celebration in the capital Dakar of Sonko’s released from prison on Thursday.
It is believed that Sonko was released on Thursday. The 49-year-old opposition leader has had a standoff with the state for closely two years and has been in prison since July 2023 facing diverse charges. Sonko’s arrest stirred to many riots in the West African nation in 2021-2023.
Senegal same, meted mass protests earlier in 2024 after President Macky Sall declared publicly the postponement of the February 25th presidential elections.
RTS noted, Sonko’s release ensues the promulgation of the law in concert public amnesty, adopted a few days ago by the majority of deputies of the National Assembly.
The legislative text cancels “all acts likely to qualify as criminal or correctional offenses committed between Feb. 1, 2021, and Feb. 25, 2024, either in Senegal and abroad, relating to demonstrations or having political motives.”
