Tanzania in Concert with Private Sector, to Digitalize Mobile Expansion in Rural Areas

NEW AFRICA BUSINESS NEWS, Freetown, Sierra Leone- Two-thirds of the country’s population resides in rural areas, where as many rural communities remain less friendly from services enjoyed by their fellow countrymen residing in the city centers. Urban area has traditionally been better serviced by telecommunications services, mobile internet inclusive. This is thus, the hard to access some of these remotes areas to install the necessary mobile towers.

However, the Government – in conjunction with the private sector is committed to give digital inclusion across Tanzania, despite location. They are aware that, connecting Tanzanians in the remote areas, the internet will boost to drive GDP and create new opportunities for the citizens.

In 2016., three telecommunications – Tigo, Airtel and Vodacom – partnered to implement six mobile broadband sites, which provided mobile internet to around 72,000 rural customers.

Through combined efforts, the operators and Government were able to implement more efficient infrastructure expansion solutions. The initiative has been a success; the mobile services have been used by 95% of the addressable market and are widely changing the structure of the market commanded by customers. This was echoed by his Zantel counterpart, noting that both companies are coming together with the goal of driving forward Tanzanian’s development.
