NEW AFRICA BUSINESS NEWS- Bread is a major diet in the Gambia which compliments rice as the main staple food in the country. With the sharp rise in tariff on major food items including Flour have certainly created a serious impact on the living standards of the people.
The increase on bread prices from six Gambian dalasis to eight dalasis by bread vendors is not in the best interest of the policy makers. But must as well be given due consideration based on the facts that, the main aim of any business is to maximize profit. Therefore, there must be serious terms of reference among major stake holders in the commerce industry so as to reach a consensus and pervert future sufferings in both urban and rural communities in dying need of bread for their morning diet
With all serious concerns, the Government of the Gambia has created a broad base atmosphere of negotiation from the Ministry of Trade and the Gambia Chamber of commerce to reach a settlement with Bakery owners and all key vendors across the country.
As the month of Ramadan is fast approaching and bread become a major source of support to compliments the Muslim month of Ramadan. Such a situation deserves immediate attention with more likelihood that, the cost of a loaf of bread will take a different price due high tariff on flour.
