Lorient have been forced to deny Jordan Ayew has signed for Borussia Dortmund after an Internet “joker” fooled a French newspaper.
Breton paper Le Telegramme reported that Ayew, 23, had joined Dortmund after seeing a Web page that had copied the exact layout of the reputed French sports daily, L’Equipe.
Ayew signed a four-year contract with Lorient only last summer, but admitted last week in Sport Bild he would welcome a move to BVB, who reportedly see the former Marseille man as a potential replacement for Ciro Immobile.
For the moment, however, Ayew remains a Lorient player.
“Contrary to what a joker who has used the lequipe.fr graphics and circulated false information on the Internet, Jordan Ayew has not signed a contract with Borussia Dortmund, nor with any other club,” a statement on Lorient’s official website read.
“The Ghana international striker was present this morning at training with his FC Lorient teammates.”
After reporting Ayew, who has also been linked to Lille, had joined the Bundesliga outfit, Le Telegramme withdrew the article and issued an apology.
“After investigation and after talking to the Internet site and the club, it has been confirmed that it was a fake, the kind of fake that sometimes circulates on social media during the transfer window,” a statement read. “Our sincere apologies to the player, the club and the website.”
