Khalifa Ababacar Sall who led the list ‘Taxawu Ndakarou’ and won the 29 June local election has been inaugurated for another five-year term in the Senegalese capital, Dakar, local media reports said on Saturday. The Mayor was re-elected in a landslide, receiving 98 votes out of 100.
His list won 16 constituencies in Dakar out of 19 at the local polls, which would pave the way for the implementation of the new law of decentralization, a reform which would eliminate the rural, regional and communal councils in favour of universal departmentalization.
With the reform the mayors of the cities of Dakar, Guediawaye, Pikine, Rufisque and Thies are elected through direct suffrage.
Khalifa Sall became Dakar’s mayor in 2009 with the opposition Coalition Benno Siggil Senegal.
The incumbent mayor has succeeded in drawing supports from almost all the incumbent mayors of the 19 constituencies in Dakar.
