The Authority of Heads of State and Government of the ECOWAS has approved the abolition of the residence permit and the introduction of the Biometric Identity Card for the Community citizens.The decision was disclosed by a statement by the ECOWAS Commission on Thursday in Abuja on the communiqué issued after the 45th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the ECOWAS in Accra, Ghana.
It said that the Ministers in charge of Security were requested to review all the security implications of the status of residence permit and the introduction of the Biometric Identity Card for Community citizens measure prior to the signing of the Supplementary Acts.
The Summit reaffirmed its sincere gratitude Blaise Compaoré, President of Burkina Faso, Mahamadou Issoufou, President of the Republic of Niger and John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, respectively, for their coordination efforts and leadership role in the free movement of persons and goods, as well as monetary cooperation in West Africa and encouraged them to sustain these efforts.
