President Uhuru Kenyatta has blamed the attacks in coastal village of Mpeketoni on political groupings and not al-Shabaab as claimed earlier.President Kenyatta on Tuesday said evidence indicate that local political networks were involved in the planning and execution of the heinous attacks.
“The attack in Lamu was a well planned, orchestrated and politically motivated ethnic violence against a Kenyan community, with the intention of profiling and evicting them for political reasons. This therefore, was not an Al Shabaab terrorist attack,” said Kenyatta.
In a strange twist of event, Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the Sunday and Monday night attacks that killed over 60 people.
To restore normalcy in the affected areas, Kenyatta said his government has enhanced security in Lamu, adding that law enforcement officer were focusing attention on actors and other entities that are actively engaged in other flashpoints around the country.
President Kenyatta said security officials in the area failed to act on intelligence and will be suspended and charged in a court of law.
