Kenya’s Court of Appeal on Thursday blocked the arrest and extradition of former Kenyan journalist Walter Barasa to the International Criminal Court (ICC).Barasa is accused of bribing witnesses in the trial of Deputy President William Ruto which is ongoing at the Hague-based court.

ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda last September requested the help of the government for Barasa’s extradition after she obtained a warrant of arrest from the ICC judges.

Barasa is contesting a ruling issued in October last year that allowed the government to commence ex-parte extradition proceedings against him.

While making the ruling, Principal Judge Richard Muongo said the ICC Prosecutor should prove with evidence that he indeed interfered with witnesses before he is extradited to ICC.

Barasa is accused of committing the crimes on diverse dates between May 20 and July 21 last year but he has vehemently denied the accusations saying that an official from the court has been threatening him.
